2GIL29 GALLERY is pleased to present Traces in Between, a solo exhibition by MY Q (b. 1981). The exhibition explores the idea of “traces” that emerge in the interstices between presence and absence, fullness and void. Through painting, MY Q visualizes the rhythm and balance of life and emotion,
transforming intangible sensations into a visual language.
“Everything begins with the heart.”
For MY Q, emotion begins in the body and expands outward through line and color. Rather than following a predetermined plan, he paints instinctively, allowing spontaneous movements to shape the composition. Black lines flow, break, and reconnect, forming spaces that are filled or left open. His canvases become rhythmic fields where collision and fluidity coexist, capturing the pulse of time and emotion.
“The moment I find balance between the gaps is where my painting begins,” says MY Q. For him, painting is not an act of depiction but of inscription — a means of recording moments where emotion resides. Lines are traces of sensation; color, the breath of the inner self. The resulting works embody the “aesthetics of the in-between,” where emptiness and fullness, stillness and movement, control and chance converge.
A Critic’s View: “The Canvas Flows Like Music”
Art critic Youngtaek Park (Kyonggi University) writes,
“MY Q’s canvases begin with black lines that evolve into fluid gestures of color and brushwork, creating abstract space. The soft tones and wavering lines drift as if guided by musical rhythm. The artist responds with bodily intuition rather than intention, leaving behind a record of time and emotion.” Park describes MY Q’s painting as “a transposition of bodily gesture into emotional record,” noting that his works “use paint and brushwork to create a visual rhythm that unfolds like music.” Through this, MY Q reveals both the physical and emotional resonance of abstract painting.
Painting Where Multidisciplinary Art Intersects
The multifaceted sensibility of MY Q permeates his paintings. For him, color becomes the vibration of emotion, line the trajectory of movement, and brushstroke the rhythm of breath. His canvases are charged spaces where invisible energy and emotion intersect, generating both visual tension and emotional resonance. While his language of abstraction avoids recognizable form, it leaves behind traces of emotion
and time — not as pure abstraction, but as an inner landscape that records the perception of life itself. Emerging between stillness and motion, between fullness and void, MY Q’s paintings embody a delicate balance. They reveal how art can exist as the rhythm of life itself.
